Tolbert enters his second season with the Miners after joining the UTEP coaching staff in 2008. Tolbert came to UTEP after five years at the helm of the Portland State University men's and women's track and field and cross country programs. Tolbert began his coaching career at Iowa Wesleyan College where he produced the first national champions in school history. He coached 21 All-Americans, including the first women's All-American in any sport in over ten years at IWC and set 25 school records, 21 conference records and two national records. In 1998, Tolbert was named the Associate Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Coach at McKendree College where he remained until 2000. Through his time at McKendree, Tolbert was part of a staff that produced three team national championships, 18 individual national titles and 76 All-Americans. Following McKendree, Tolbert entered the Division I scene as an assistant coach at Syracuse University in 2000. While at Syracuse, Tolbert added two NCAA qualifiers, one USATF qualifier, an All-American and several school records to his resume. He was named the Portland State University track and field and cross country head coach in 2003. Tolbert's teams produced the best Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Championship finishes and highest point totals in school history. He produced eight PSU Athletes of the Year, 22 Big Sky Champions and 79 All-Big Sky honors recipients. The Vikings were equally as successful in the classroom being named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team from 2006 to 2008. Additionally, the Vikings men's team held the highest GPA amongst all PSU men's programs from 2006-08. Together, the men's and women's teams garnered 150 Big Sky Academic All-Conference Awards. |
