Janet Judge To Speak Thursday, Sept. 19
Sept. 5, 2013
Janet Judge, president of Sports Law Associates LLC, will speak at UTEP on Thursday (Sept. 19). She will be addressing social media, college students, and their online brands. Judge will speak at 11:30 a.m. in the Larry K. Durham Center.
In this presentation, Judge, a former three sport Division I student athlete, athletics administrator and now sports attorney, will focus on social media and the underlying behaviors students and student-athletes share online. Using pictures and stories taken mostly from the athletics area, this presentation will challenge students and student-athletes to think about their online band, their participation in and documentation of risky behaviors and the real implications for their educational and employment opportunities.
Judge is president of Sports Law Associates LLC, where she concentrates her practice on intercollegiate sports, employment and social media law counseling. She brings her legal and diverse collegiate athletic experiences to the table when advising and representing colleges and universities on a wide variety of general employment and sports specific issues, including Office for Civil Rights (OCR) investigations, strategic program development, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility, infractions and certification cases, social media, EADA compliance, contract negotiation, pay equity analysis, Title IX compliance, harassment, hazing, academic fraud and athlete misconduct. She conducts internal investigations, drafts policy, conducts training and works with institutions to develop best practices around Title IX compliance issues, both school-wide (harassment, including sexual violence) and specific to athletics (programmatic).
In addition to her law practices, Judge is an NCAA grant speaker and trainer at Division I, II, & III institutions and athletic conferences. She has worked with student-athletes and staff at more than 300 colleges and universities. In 2011, the National Association of Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) named her Administrator of the Year for Athletic Organizations.
Judge is a graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe College where she served as Assistant Director of Athletics, Alumni Relations Office Liaison, Vice-Chair of its athletics oversight committee and a member of its NCAA Division I Athletics Certification Steering Committee. As an undergraduate, Janet was an eight-time NCAA Division I varsity letter winner in soccer (captain, three national tournament appearances), basketball and track & field. While attending law school, she coached basketball and soccer at Simmons College. Janet clerked for the Honorable Norman H. Stahl, United States Court of Appeals. She is included in the Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Sports and Employment Law and has been named a SuperLawyer for her intercollegiate Sports Law work.
