John Bohannon, Men's Basketball
Bohannon was chosen MVP of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso with a pair of double-doubles versus teams that each posted 22 wins and advanced to postseason play a year ago. He averaged 16 points and 13.5 rebounds in the event, shooting 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the field and 70 percent (14-for-20) from the line. He also had five blocks in the two games. Bohannon pulled down 10 rebounds in the second half against Western Illinois. On the Fighting Leathernecks' last possession in the final 30 seconds, Bohannon blocked a shot and secured a defensive rebound, preserving the Miners' 65-64 lead in an eventual 67-64 win. He scored 13 points and added nine rebounds in the second half and overtime periods as UTEP outlasted Denver in double OT, 60-54, to claim the tournament title. Earlier in the week, Bohannon played 23 minutes in a 70-55 win over Montana State and contributed five points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Kayla Thornton, Women's Basketball
Kayla Thornton poured in 23 points and grabbed five rebounds to move into second place all time on the UTEP career rebounding list, and the Miners defeated Texas Southern, 87-61, at home on Dec. 29. She also equaled her career high with four blocked shots while adding a pair of assists and three steals in only 21 minutes of action.
